My name is Edward Gordon, Amy worked with me as a career counselor in 2016. She was extremely knowledgeable of several fields of work. She was understanding of what it is like to be young and unsure of what career to pursue. She was able to help me identify several possible avenues and was even able to link me with a highly respected person within the Boston Public School system. She also gave me advice that helped me to establish healthy professional working habits.

Edward, 28, Boston

My company got restructured and I was anxious about needing to move out of state in order to keep my job or search for a new one. After 13 years with the company, my job had changed significantly and I had taken on a great deal of responsibility I was not aware of until I sat down with Amy and she asked me all those questions. I ended up with a great new resume and the confidence to explain to my employer why they should keep my job local. It worked. I interviewed again for my own job, got rehired for a higher salary and I didn’t have to move. Best possible coaching I could have received by anyone!

I came to Amy at a time where I was pretty lost professionally, looking for direction. Through her program I was able to recognize skills that I had and how those skills fit into the industries I was interested in. Her knowledge and experience allowed her to provide invaluable advice and insight into the real world and her easy-going demeanor made each interaction more comfortable and less formal than it may have been otherwise. She is sincere in her encouragement and desire for her clients to be successful and is not one to shy away from pushing you to be better. I enjoyed the time we worked together and am much more optimistic and excited for my future after having worked through her program.

My clients range in age from 13 to 50 and live across the U.S.

Read on for he reasons I love career and life coaching, broken down by age group of the clients I have worked with – and what I have learned about their gifts and what drives them.

Jump to your age group:

Teenagers:

Did you know? Today’s teenagers are not “Millennials”? They are the next generation! In my work with teenagers over the last decade (since 2006 formally) I have seen teenagers, as a cultural group, change significantly. High school students who are today between the ages of 13 and 18/19 have a different mindset then they did 10 years ago. While the Millennials, their predecessors, held this mindset to some degree, today’s teenagers are far more focused on collaboration, camaraderie, and community. From peer pressure to school projects, teenagers are far more focused on inclusion and befriending one another in order to lift up their peers. As a career adviser and life coach to this age group, I find that teenagers:

  • Are concerned with equity and fairness and typically need to work on developing their ideas and visions.
  • Are idealistic and hopeful about the future.
  • Want very much to learn how the world works.

Recent and soon-to-be college graduates (ages 20-24):

These are the youngest of the millennial generation which ranges in age right now from 19 to 35. I love working with Millennials and I want you to know that they have received a massively bad and false reputation. They are very much focused on achievement and experiencing the world as much as possible. This makes a great deal of sense since they have been born into the post-Internet reality that simultaneously birthed the global community. They have never experienced a disconnected world. For them, it is always been possible to hop a plane and study abroad in China for six months. For Gen Xers, this is the world we matured into in our teens and 20s. While we were learning how to surf the Internet and connect with people and chat rooms, recent college grads were babies born into a world knowing nothing but the Internet. For this reason, being tech savvy is in their genes and having an expectation that the world that could work together for the greater good is part of their worldview. As a career adviser and life coach to this age group, I find that soon-to-be and recent college grads:

  • Have a vision of the world that can be fair and equitable, but they have not yet learned the “how” -those skills necessary to navigate this new global economy that were not taught as part of their formal education.
  • Want to know how to navigate the world of work, teamwork and problem solving.
  • Are eager to make connections between their personal interests and potential careers.
  • Are far more interested in and focused on service than they are given credit for.

Millennials age 24 to 30:

I work with many people in this age group, and I enjoy it immensely. This is the heart of the Millennial generation, and they have been ridiculed in ways that make absolutely no sense to who they actually are. These young people are ambitious, and they want to find a way to connect their skills and ideas for how businesses, organizations, and problem solving can be more efficient and innovative. They also grew up largely in a globalized reality, but were not given the tools to know how to navigate the innovation space. They no the world is filled with problems to solve, they want to be a problem solvers, and they are very ambitious to get to that place. They are willing to take risks and try things no one else has tried to do. As a career adviser and life coach to this age group, I find that Millennials age 24 to 30:

  • Are ambitious to know how to succeed and achieve their goals.
  • Want to understand and learn skills to make them better team players.
  • Want to know how to navigate the world of work while simultaneously jumping into the start-up/ innovation space in order to immerse themselves and learn as many skills as possible.
  • Understand that the economy relies on a problem-solving and creative mindset, so they are seeking guidance and tools to strengthen themselves.

Millennials age 31 to 35:

This group was the first to be called Millennials, and they bore the brunt of the judgment of their generation during the early aughts (early 2000s). They ushered society into the age of social media, alternative ways to communicate, and technological approaches to nearly everything. When it comes to their careers, this age group is bridging today’s leaders with the next generation of thought, consciousness and community mindedness. I find that they are striving to open new pathways in innovation and the economy that dig deeply into what could be possible while smartly using app-based technology solutions. They leaning toward future leadership, knowing that they will be the ones assuming those roles. As a career adviser and life coach to this age group, I find that Millennials age 31 to 35:

  • Are genuinely considering how their careers have unfolded and will continue to unfold in the coming 10 to 20 years.
  • May be seeking career changes after 7 to 10 years of work that has not been personally fulfilling.
  • Are aware of the leadership roles they are being called step into.
  • Have been very ambitious, and are now asking questions about how their experiences can help to provide leadership and vision for change in the world.
  • Want to start businesses of their own.

Gen X-ers age 36 to 45:

This age group grew up with mothers and adult women in their lives who were subject to the sexism and workplace inequality à la Dolly Parton’s character in the movie 9 to 5. As children during the pre-Internet days, we were riding bikes and swimming in lakes while the masculine-feminine dynamic in the workplace was one of extreme inequality. For this reason, we (yep, this is my age group) – men and women alike – learned and self-taught women’s empowerment. Of course there are examples of older women who were leaders and ground-breakers before us, but for the most part, it is our generation of women that have had to learn the confidence and the strength to not just be equal to men in the workplace, but to believe and act as leaders and CEOs. As a career adviser and life coach to this age group, I find that Gen X-ers age 36 to 45:

  • For men and women alike, achievements have been gained, and now these people seek coaching guidance to learn how to showcase the skills they have mastered.
  • Want coaching around how to better tell their story and package themselves as a valuable asset – and feel the confidence the rightly deserve.
  • The women in this age group, for more than 15 years, have been conscious of the fact that they have been pioneers, paving the way for female leadership of businesses to be the new norm, but they need to learn to feel their own empowerment.
  • Have been pushing through that glass ceiling, but there are still areas of personal development that remain to be fully realized.
  • Want to start businesses of their own.

45+ Somethings:

I love working with at this age group, primarily because it gives me an opportunity to show them just how valuable their 20 years of knowledge and experience truly is. In today’s day and age, the idea that someone over 40 is not valuable in the workplace is a cultural infection that has taken hold and needs to be shaken off. My clients learn how to reinvent themselves (if Madonna can do it, so can you!) and the process is much like a personal rebirth into precisely where they want to be in life. I have found that many of my clients are seeking meaningful career change, but they have never been encouraged to believe that their current skill set can be perfect for transitioning into a new career. Nothing could be further from the truth! As a career adviser and life coach to 45+ Somethings, I find that they:

  • Are seeking to reclaim and own their own stories and the professional power.
  • Want to start businesses of their own.
  • Have so much to offer, and so much wisdom to share, that there is often a synergy with moving into the start up/innovation space where they can partner with young millennial inventors who need wisdom to round out their teams achieve their goals.
  • Feel like it it is finally time to pursue their dreams and throw caution to the wind if they have navigated their careers in a conservative manner until this point.
